Gender Day at the UN Climate Change Summit (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh has shed a light on women’s role to address the climate change crisis at national, regional and global community levels and to discuss matters of gender within the climate agenda.

Jusoor Post interviewed some COP participants on Gender Day on November 14 to let their voices be heard worldwide and their reasons for attending COP27.

Heather Buchanan, Director and Co-founder of Bankers for NetZero, told Jusoor Post:

I think it is one of our ambitions for next year to have more senior women as part of the process. People who deal with women in the finance sector are thinking whether they can do it or not, but still those people have not yet reached the belief of what women can actually do.

Abhigna Pinnamerddy, Consultant at Core CarbonX Solutions Pvt. Ltd., told us:

Our company is based in India and we work in 12 countries. I am presenting the company at COP27. I think women’s participation is very important, and it will help in reaching a more environmental-friendly solution.

Rachel Starkey from the Sustainability and Social Responsibility at Alex Apparels told Jusoor Post about women’s role in saving the environment:

Textile is one of the villains of climate change. We are here to change this story. Through material innovations, we have been able to repurpose all the existing polyester. Recycled polyester is 20% less on climate, 30% less on energy, and about 55% less on the water needed to produce it. The result are products that are affordable to the masses.

We use the remaining of T-shirts’ neck lines to transform the lives of 800 million women and girls who cannot afford sanitary pads for their periods. On Gender Day, we are thrilled to share simple but practical application under the banner “together for implementation”. We are partnering with governments, private sector and organizations so that women and girls can have the dignity they deserve.

From Burkina Faso, Bibata Pilpre Barry, President of REPARE, told Jusoor Post:

I am running a small human rights NGO, especially for women’s rights. I am participating at COP27 to try to bring women’s voices in different communities. I am happy to share this experience.

I am from the Sahel region in West Africa where women and indigenous women face many challenges, and we need to be involved in taking decisions. We are trying to focus on the education of young generations, especially girls. I hope we can fulfill our objectives.

From Egypt, Mohamed El-Sery, Founder and Group CEO of Mentors, told us:

I managed a panel about empowering women in Africa and their impact on sustainability and economy. We were showing that women can have a great influence. In our company, we take initiatives to empower 10 million females in the coming years in Africa. We have started already in Egypt, UAE, Zambia and the coming step will be in Nigeria.
