The current year is the 2023rd year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 23rd year of the 3rd millennium and the 21st century, and the fourth year of the 2020s decade. The first six months of 2023 were full of many special and exceptional events.
January witnessed Croatia’s entry into the Schengen region without borders and its adoption of the euro as its official currency. When it joined the EU in 2013, the nation made a commitment to joining the eurozone, according to the BBC.
In February, one of the worst earthquakes in at least a century hit central Turkey and northwestern Syria. It killed more than 2,000 people, while a second powerful tremor hours later threatened to overwhelm rescue efforts, the Guardian reported.
