Officials at the Bangladeshi city of Sitakunda said on Sunday that a massive fire at a container depot killed at least 37 people and injured more than 100, reported AFP.

Local firefighters are struggling to put the fire out at BM Inland Container Depot, which is associated with a joint project between the Netherlands and Bangladesh, reported the Washington Post.

Five firefighters were among the dead, Main Uddin, director-general of the Bangladesh fire service and civil defense, said in press statements, adding that 15 firefighters are being treated for injuries sustained while putting out the blaze.

The fire, which took place in the early hours of Sunday, caused a series of explosions that were felt as far as 4 kilometers away, and several buildings suffered damage due to the massive blaze, according to the Bangladeshi Daily star.

Uddin said that explosives experts from the military have been called to inspect the site of the incident as a precaution to avoid more blasts.
