Derna catastrophe raises alarm to re-evaluate construction of dams

Libya’s Derna was hit by the devastating Storm Daniel, causing severe floods that weakened the capacity of the city’s 2 dams and made them collapse. As a result, Derna was submerged by about 23.5 million m3 of water, and 7,000 people were killed.
A climate professor at Qassim University and vice president of the Saudi Weather and Climate Society sees that countries have to re-evaluate the construction and the soil of their dams to face climate change impacts such as rain storms and flooding in a world with more than 57,000 large dams.
